MOBILE LAW COMES TO SABAH
Consider this imaginary scenario, It’s 9 am on a Monday morning. Sabah ’s prominent lawyer Terrence Lee is rushing to High Court 6 for a trial in Kota Kinabalu High Court building. While waiting for his case to come on, he meets his colleague Ragbhir Singh another prominent local lawyer. While discussing the case casually, Ragbhir informs that there is a new decision of the Sandakan High Court handed down last Friday which may be relevant to Terrence’s case. Although Terrence is not aware of this case because it is so new, he is not worried because he takes out his PDA phone and with the click of a few buttons, he is able to update himself.
Here is some good news for legal practitioners, law students and members of the public. Welcome to the Marcel Jude Law Reporter or MJLR available at my website at borneobest.com. You can now update and do research on the latest court decisions from the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak . The service is still in its infancy and is being developed but you can now access it at our website at borneobest.com. The service is available to the public free of charge although we welcome any donations or contribution to maintain the service.
To access the service, go to borneobest.com. Then look for the link Malaysian Laws Online or more specifically Marcel Jude Law Reporter (MJLR). Click on the links and you will find the first volume of cases known as MJLR 2009a and click further to see a menu of cases which contain the names of the parties, the name of the Judge and the MJLR citation. To view a particular case, click the specific link. However, there is a faster way. By using the Site Map or the search function at the top of the webpage, you can search for cases. For example, if you are looking for a case on dangerous drugs or the Contracts Act, just type and click the GO button to get the results. If you know the name of the parties for example Wong vs Ali, type either “Wong vs Ali” or “Wong” or “Ali”. You can also search by the name of a judge e.g. YA Jeffrey Tan or the name of a lawyer e.g. Terrence Lee. You can also view the document in PDF although you need to download Acrobat Reader 9 which can be downloaded for free.
HANDPHONE/PDA MOBILITY
However, besides viewing the PDF, this website has one advantage. It is quite difficult to view and read PDF documents in handphones and PDAs, If you zoom the PDF too large then you have to scroll up-down,left-right and before long you will end up with a serious headache or damage your eye sight. This should not happen to law reports in borneobest.com because the documents are available for comfortable reading and scrolling within the screen of the handphone or PDA.
At the moment, the service is still in its experimental and infancy stage and we are still adding more cases. We appreciate your feedback and comments by email to borneobest@gmail.com . There are also other stuff such as High Court Rules and sample agreements being developed at the website. If you are feeling bored or tired check out Borneo Fun Web. If you like to get a web page or web site or advertise your business at borneobest.com, get in touch with us. The website has a high daily traffic which is growing. It also hosts an online bookstore. Come 2010, borneobest.com will launch the first online library in Malaysia .
